5 Steps to Sort Out Your Space

Updated: Jan 15

Let's be real, organizing can be very overwhelming. If sorting out your space is on your 2022 to-do list, here are five steps to help get your life in order:

  1. M - Make categories: keep, sell, donate. and toss

  2. U - Unify "keep" items with other like items in the house

  3. S - Sort and store items into containers and/or organizational bins

  4. E - Exercise routine maintenance

  5. S - Smile with satisfaction

...MUSES, naturally :)

Let's break it down a bit...

  1. To initiate the organization process, break down your stuff into the following categories: keep, sell, donate, and toss. Once you decipher what stays and what goes, bag up all the stuff that you're tossing, donating, and/or selling and plan on getting it out of your space asap. We always suggest taking donations to a local charity or shelter in need.

  2. Now that you have cleared out the unwanted items, it's time to unify all the items you're keeping with other similar items in the house. It's best to group items by function and/or room and be sure to avoid getting carried away with grouping things into extremely specific categories.

  3. This is the fun part, it's time to create a system to organize your stuff. The easiest way to do this is to contain everything using organizational bins. Choose containers that are large enough for the items they are storing, but that also fit the space where they are being stored.

  4. Routine maintenance is the key to keeping this system in order. A little tidy up every week-or-so will prevent you from having to do a complete organizational overhaul for quite a while.

  5. Smile with satisfaction because now you're organized! The time that you put into creating a functional space will be returned with all the time you'll save now that you know exactly where everything is.
